Future Plans for Transportation
Legacy 2035 is the long-term plan for the future of the surface transportation system of the St. Louis region as stated by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The document identifies six topics of focus for the future of transportation in the St. Louis area, which are:
1. Preserving the existing infrastructure
2. Maintaining safe and secure travel
3. Managing congestion, particularly roadways
4. Improving access to opportunity
5. Maintaining the country’s current trend of
sustainable development
6. Sustaining an efficient movement of goods. [31]
The performance of the transportation system and its adherence to these goals will be measured according to public surveys that provide valuable feedback on regional rider patterns and demands. Additionally, an environmental impact model, the Gateway Blueprint Model, will be useful in determining the effect of certain transportation projects and decisions on the local communities. [31] The key element for the future of St. Louis transportation is involving local citizens who are the stakeholders in the entire system. To meet this, citizens directly affected are informed of the impact of local projects, their opinions are taken into the highest consideration, and all plans reflect knowledge about their neighborhoods as well as a balance between local and regional priorities in terms of metropolitan growth and cost impact. Legacy 2035 seeks to sustain growth in transportation and improve the quality of life in St. Louis County with consideration to the impact on local communities and their citizens.
